What is mobile scaffolding and which one to choose?

23.10.2024

You don’t buy scaffolding every day, so it’s good to know how you plan to use it before choosing. Mobile scaffolding, as the name suggests, is a more practical alternative to traditional scaffolding, suitable for hobby enthusiasts, various household tasks, or even professional use.

Mobile scaffolding for household use has several advantages, especially due to its compact size, safe, and stable surface. It’s often used as a more practical ladder for activities like:

  • painting or facade repairs
  • window cleaning
  • small construction tasks at home or in the garden
  • replacing lighting fixtures

Such mobile scaffolding fits into any house or apartment, and you can choose from various sizes depending on your requirements for maximum dimensions and reach. The smallest models can be very compact while offering sufficient stability, with a reach starting at 2.7 meters.

From a professional perspective, practical scaffolding also offers several possibilities. It’s most commonly used by builders, electricians, painters, and others who value quality, safety, and practicality due to frequent transport between job sites. The market today offers a wide range of options, but always prioritize quality and product reviews. The main criteria for choosing mobile scaffolding are material, maximum working height, and load capacity.

ALUMINUM vs. STEEL

Mobile scaffolding is primarily made of steel or aluminum. The material impacts its weight and construction. Both options have their advantages and disadvantages.

Steel scaffolding:

  • higher load capacity
  • compact design
  • heavier weight

Aluminum scaffolding:

  • lighter weight
  • lower load capacity
  • less stability for smaller scaffolds

When working with steel or aluminum scaffolding, weight is less of a concern as both are mobile on wheels. Steel scaffolding tends to feel more stable, especially for smaller models.

MAXIMUM LOAD CAPACITY

The load capacity, stated in kilograms, is the maximum weight the scaffold platform can bear – a combination of the worker’s weight and their tools. Aluminum mobile scaffolding typically has a load capacity of 150–220 kg, while steel scaffolding supports 270–450 kg. Aluminum scaffolding often consists of multiple parts for better stability, which can make it harder to transport, assemble, and store.

MAXIMUM WORKING HEIGHT

The maximum working height is not the height a person reaches while working on the scaffold. According to current legislation, it is defined as work performed 2 meters above the platform level. This means the maximum working height is 2 meters above the highest point where the scaffold platform can be secured. The maximum reach for mobile scaffolding starts at 2.7 m. Mobile scaffolding is also stackable and, if needed, can be assembled up to 8 m for indoor use or 12 m for outdoor use (as per STN EN 1004-1).

Aluminum mobile scaffolding is most common, but steel scaffolding also has its presence. The Metaltech brand offers the Jobsite series, characterized by compact steel scaffolds with high load capacity and practical accessories. These products are ideal for hobbyists and professionals alike. Whatever mobile scaffold you choose, the most important thing is safety.
